Piezoelectric ceramics are a type of polycrystalline material, and their piezoelectric properties can be explained by the piezoelectric properties of the crystal. Under mechanical force, the total electric dipole moment (polarization) of the crystal changes, resulting in piezoelectric phenomena. The polarization state is the temporary equilibrium and unified state of the relative displacement of the charged particles of a dielectric medium caused by the electric field and the mutual attraction between the charges. There are three main polarization mechanisms.

() Electron displacement polarization – When atoms or ions in a dielectric medium are subjected to electric field forces, the negatively charged centers of positively charged atomic nuclei and shell electrons do not coincide.

(2) Ion displacement polarization – The relative displacement of positive and negative ions in a dielectric medium under the action of an electric field force, resulting in the generation of an electric dipole moment.

(3) Orientation polarization – Poled molecules that make up a dielectric medium have a certain intrinsic (intrinsic) electric moment. Due to thermal motion, the orientation is disordered, and the total electric moment is zero. When an external electric field is applied, the electric dipole moment is arranged in the direction of the electric field, resulting in a macroscopic electric dipole moment.
